I purchased the game from GameStop because of the exclusive "Emperor's elite pack" that they were offering from that specific retailer. Usually, I buy all of my games on Steam so this hole trip was a bit nostalgic for me. When I got home I decided to go ahead and register my game with Steam and digitally download it. Don't ask why I decided to do this...I honestly have no idea, force of habit I guess. Anyway, I registered Space Marine with steam and kicked off the download. Everything was peachy. I was getting 760kb/s download speed and figured it would take a good 3 or 4 hours so I decided to go out and get dinner. Well, 4 hours later, I return home to discover that my game was only 28% installed. "What!?!". Apparently, Steam had decided that I didn't really deserve my 760kb/s connection and bumped me down to a measly 150kb/s. This probably had a lot to do with server load on Steam's side but, back on July 15th of this year, Steam announced that they had made improvements to their “maximum aggregate bandwidth” to “help (them) satisfy spikes in demand when there’s a big release” Source.
So, where was this improved service when I needed it most? When billions of Imperial Citizen's lives where on the line and no one showed up to save them, where were you Steam? Where...were...you?
In all seriousness, I would love an explanation from Valve as to why my download was throttled back from 760kb/s to 150kb/s. Also, if anyone else experienced download issues with this game (or any other Steam game since July 15th) let us know in the comments section below this article.
