Snow's Place - Voice Acting Featured

There's something that game developers can make sure to do to help people actually get into a game.  It also helps to indentify with the characters and immerse themselves into the plotline.  Here's a little rant on that very thing...

As I was going through my emails and lists of women to be featured in our “Women Who’ve Got Game” articles I came to the conclusion that I wanted to be involved somehow in the gaming industry.  Other than what I’m already doing, of course.  Since I suck a programming, and can’t draw a straight line with a ruler the only thing I could come up with was my voice.  I have this odd habit of imitating random voices and sounds in games I play.  I don’t even realize I’m doing it.  Even my cats give me weird looks.

It also occurred to me that I could do a better job than some of the voice actors I’ve heard.  I mean, come on… can you at least try to put a little feeling into it when your mother is dying and your begging someone to help?  The bland voice acting makes me cringe.  It’s not that difficult to pull on the emotions you already have and put them in the script that you’re reading.  I know it’s harder to do voice acting than regular acting purely because people can’t see your face.  You have to be able to push that emotion across.

I’m not saying all games have bad voice acting.  There are a few that just astound me.  Dragon Age, Overlord I and II, System Shock, Bioshock, and even World of Warcraft are some  that have seriously awesome voice actors.  The richness of the voices adds a level of immersion that would be lacking otherwise.  How can a player relate to a character if the character is just bland?  It’s impossible.

Companies that crank out games all the time should realize the importance of hiring someone who actually has talent in the voice acting business.  Not only will it make the game more fun, but it will no doubt make that game stick out in the player’s mind so when they go to discuss games with their friends that one will be talked about.  The more people talk about the game the more likely it will be bought.  Only good business, right?

That being said… if any company out there wants a fresh voice actor hit me up.  Or if anyone has questions, comments, or just random things to say email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
